A write up about Opeth in Auckland by Finn of NZGamer

Ok Here’s my write up-

I flew up to Auckland and sh*t and stayed at some backpackers. Met up with sum friends before the show and had a few drinks before heading over to the venue. Subtract were opening, but they were pretty boring so we went to the bar and had a few more drinks while talking to some random people. There was some cool guy in a 1349 shirt who I had a massive talk with about Black Metal and how awesome it is, he was from some NZ band. Then some chicks came up and told my friend he looked like Alexi Laiho from Children of Bodom, which pretty much made his day. Then I bought an Opeth Tour 06 T-Shirt and we went in as the roadies started setting up for Opeth.

We had a wicked view of the stage, slightly to the left of the Mosh and right at the front so we could see Peter and Mikael real well, they were pretty much the only ones we needed to see anyway. Anyways the place went dark and smoke started billowing out over the stage and the lights went blue. Some cool patterns and sh*t as everyone got excited. The anticipation was intense. And then out they came and went straight into Ghost of Perdition. Holy f*** it was intense, I wasn;t gonna mosh for a while but pretty much got pulled in. Was about one row back and it was going nuts, pretty much right under Mikael. The song was insane and the crush was nuts. A lot of people singing along.

They then played White Cluster, which I moshed through before deciding to headbang on the outskirts. Still an awesome view.

The Amen Corner and Baying of the Hounds were both executed to perfection. Loved every moment. But then they went back to Orchid and played Under The Weeping Moon which I went back into the moshpit for. Loved the way it went insane during the heavy parts and then everyone mellowed and swayed for the soft parts.

Closure was amazing live, The Grand Conjuration was evil as f*** and awesome live. Then they played The Leper Affinity. I went nuts again as it is one of my favourite Opeth tracks. It was awesome live, flawlessly executed. The band then said goodbye and went off stage.

It was about 5 minutes and they came back on for the encore. The crowd were chanting Opeth. The band came back and played Deliverance. It was f***ing awesome. Moshed like f*** for it and it absolutely destroyed live.

I think it was here where the keyboardist started playing some instrumental little thing and Mikael introduced all the band, or that could have been before the Leper Affinity, anyways they then went into DEMON OF THE FALL. This song absolutely slayed live and things went insane. It was totally awesome.

The band were flawless and executed everything to perfection. The setlist was great even if a few favourites were missing. Mikael was an awesome frontman, his little jokes and sh*t between songs were awesome. Very cool guy, very funny. cu*t! *pulls the fingers*

Excellent show and I hope they come back.
