Today I'm going to talk about an album, I think everyone my age has owned / borrowed, or at least enjoyed at some point in our (lets face it) short lives.
Its some of the best pop / house music to come out of France, its a group, that is no doubt, the most successful to sprout from the electronic genre, I am of course talking about Daft Punk.
And more so the Dual experience that is the album Discovery, and the DVD Interstella 5555.
In 2001 I was a 14 year old pup, had crushes on girls, and no testicles to gather up the courage to go talk to them.
I was listening to filthy stuff like Sash, my favourite album of all time was 'Gatecrasher Discotech' and funnily enough, I knew alot of people into the same kind of things.
As a 14 year old my weekends were spent illegally drinking alcohol, playing with BB Guns, pumping myself full of sugar, and spending entire weekend's watching TV / Playing video games, usually Final Fantasy 7 and 8 at my mate Nicks place, and when I say 'spending entire weekend's' I of course mean, no sleeping from Thursday night until Sunday night, it was about this time TVNZ had 'm2' on all night, with a tagline 'sleep is over-rated' it was a winner with me and my geekier friends.
Around this time a video clip aired buy Leiji Matsumoto (the man behind Captain Harlock and Star Blazers) It had the distinctive retro 70's /anime look, so popular in France, there were 4 blue musicians, playing to a crowd of blue people, It was chapter one of Interstella 5555, and track 1 off discovery. I think Nick went and bought the album the next day, and we listened to it solidly for years.
Aerodynamic's solo helped convert me to rock, Digital Love made me think about girls, and Too Long eventually became my favourite track, on the album, and the DVD, The album (the DVD in particular) done another thing, which ill admit to right now, It got me addicted to Anime, after this I began to collect Anime DVD's, Robot figurines etc etc, its my vice, and I love them all.
I still watch the film, and enjoy the masterful music, Its an album I consider to be truly great in our Generation, put together brilliantly, made even better with the animated musical, its really a classic time piece that everyone in my generation should hold on too.
