“Interesting that i stumbed upon this…And i shouldn’t really add comment now but some of the comments made me feel that i needed to do so…
First of all yes – one i am a presenter of a channel, two i wrote, produced and directed this show which is no easy task and three i have my whole life been a seasoned game fan therefore follow any evolution of the gaming industry with a passion…
It comes down to this, I’m not sure how many of you have had experience making tv shows but there is alot more too it than meets the eye, when you only have three days to shoot a whole show and basically spend your whole day running from interview to interview it gets a bit hectic…. the reality was that we had NO interviews setup for Nintendo before we left as it was a mission to even make contact with the representative in NZ, and unfortunately at E3 you can’t just roll up to someone and say “hey dude, im from NZ can we have a chat…” – doesn’t work like that…. so on top of that, when you have a full on day of shooting and then get told you have to wait 5 hours just to see a machine, which is essentially half of your day, you have to make priorities…. we all know that nintendo dominated, but to be honest not even seeing the machine it was only really after the event that i even realised this, as the whole thing with E3 is a press orientated event – No lanyard means no party….
Apologies to Chris for whatever i did to you in a past life, that’s a lot of tension you got built up there my friend…
Also, the main point of the whole show which thankfully someone got at the end was – It wasn’t a show for gamers specifically, we all know the stigma’s attached with gamers, and in my opinion i wanted to create a show that finally showed to what extent the gaming industry is a dominating and credible force ie actors etc getting involved… if it was an hour show doing blow by blow reports on the playability and gameplay of games the majority of people that weren’t seasoned gamers would switch off… it was a piece aimed to glorify the industry, not to just keep games forum posters salivating…
funnily enough until it was mentioned here i had no idea that dave chappelle had done a skit on gta.. just checked it now, so apologies to those who cry plagirism, it was fairly obvious in the first place and thus a no-brainer….
and the other, final point was that in televsion, at the end of the day with edits you are gonna put in the stuff that ‘works’ the best, sure we had IV’s with XBox represntatives, but when you are dealing with 45 year olds that are about as visually entertaining as watching paint dry, you are gonna do the best with what you’ve got to make the best you can to appeal to an audience that transcends the market…
at the end of the day a success for an individual platform / title in the best light is a success for the industry on a whole… and the faster this myth about gaming just being for geeks with no lives passes the better.
again apologies that i couldn’t wait 5 hours to see the Wii and that i didn’t do a 15 minute interview on Halo..
and especially to Chris for making you so mad, i’ll try and be more tailored to your tatses the next time round.
I hope some of you saw the show for it’s real purpose, to big up the gaming industry as a whole and not just a glorified games review.
